Band Spotlight: The Portraits

Spotlight on another brilliant band on the line up at Stop Look Listen on 4th June: The Portraits.

The Portraits’ warm fusion of folk, music theatre, jazz and classical styles with beautiful harmonies, has led in 2013 to BBC 6 Music airplay, a support slot for jazz legend Courtney Pine and a slot at Glastonbury Festival.

Despite thought-provoking lyrical themes, their concerts are colourful, fun and electric.

Band Spotlight: Rotait

Brighton-based duo Rotait are making waves on the live music scene with their interesting setup based around cello and drums. Both members of the band also sing and play guitar, swapping instruments throughout the performance.

With influences ranging from PJ Harvey to Nick Drake, and a sound closely related to the likes of The White Stripes and Radiohead, their live shows demonstrate their ability to mix many influences. Their debut album “Sleep Tonight” received great reviews and the band have recently featured on the front cover of Brighton Unsigned.

Don’t miss Rotait playing live at Stop Look Listen on June 4th.

Band Spotlight: The Cry Baby

image

Very excited to announce the line up for the next Stop Look Listen on June 4th will be headlined by DreamPopFolk supersounds of London-based The Cry Baby.

Musically The Cry Baby don’t fit any particular category; there’s a hint of folk, echoes of trip-hop, the escapism of dreampop and occasionally a stripped-back baroque sound. It’s all carefully considered without being so perfect that it becomes sterile. As such, this combination of subtlety, experimentalism and almost lullaby-like sounds is quite beguiling.

Artist Spotlight: Kal Lavelle

“Exquisitely beautiful & raw, it’s as if she’s talking directly to you!” - Perez Hilton

Kal Lavelle

Making a welcome return to Stop Look Listen to celebrate our second birthday, Kal Lavelle is a very special, captivating performer. A writer of not only insanely catchy vocal hooks, but wonderfully filmic lyrics.

Kal’s EP ‘Shivers’ reached #5 in the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart and has charted across the world. Alongside a host of live dates last year including many gigs supporting Ed Sheeran (playing to 10,000 fans at the huge Thetford Forrest gig), Kal found time to provide vocals for the Artful Dodger’s Summer dance tune “Could Just Be The Bassline”. Her tens of thousands of hits on youtube prove her worth as a fantastic singer and songwriter, but see her live to experience a mesmerising performance.

Artist Spotlight: The Spare Room

The Spare Room

Recorded in a cottage in Cornwall, Trevor Horn’s SARM studios, university dorms, mates living rooms, and the spare room in his parents old flat, The Spare Room is songwriter Louis Doyle and anyone who wants to pick up something noisy and join in. Think of it as philosophically akin to music assembly at school. The debut album ‘The Spare Room’ is set for release later in 2013.

Artist Spotlight: Sophie Jamieson

Sophie JamiesonSophie paints pictures and atmosphere with words and a delicately-plucked guitar. A sound which began in the conventional female singer-songwriter vein is developing into something more poignant and ethereal.

Gigging relentlessly over just 9 months has brought her increasing recognition in London and a signing with Folkroom Records.

As well has achieving radio play on BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing Berkshire, Sophie has played live in session for Amazing Radio, Bob’s Folk Show, Brooklands Radio and Shoreditch Radio, begun to penetrate the blogosphere and been supported Emily and the Woods.

Sophie is currently working towards her debut EP to be released in June. More instruments are being introduced, the bass increased, the electrics soaring and lyrics darkening.
